An E-mini Russell 2000 Futures Contract is the standard size Russell 2000 futures contract at CME Group. It provides exposure to the performance of the Russell index, a key benchmark for the U.S. stock market. The E-mini has a leveraged contract value, making it more accessible to individual traders. These contracts expire quarterly and settle based on the index value at expiration, allowing traders to speculate on market movements.

RTY is the CME Globex symbol for E-mini Russell 2000 Index futures. Some traders search for it as the RTY index or RTY stock, but RTY is a futures contract, not a share. The underlying Russell 2000 Index is a market capitalization weighted index of 2,000 small cap U.S. stocks across many sectors, and CME Group describes it as a key benchmark for small cap U.S. stocks. That is why Russell 2000 index futures are often called small cap futures. Traders also search for the contract as emini Russell, e mini Russell or Russell 2k futures.
Each RTY contract is valued at $50 times the Russell 2000 Index. The minimum tick is 0.10 index points, which equals $5.00 per contract. One full index point equals $50 per contract. For the Micro E-mini Russell 2000 (M2K), the contract is $5 times the index, so one point equals $5 and one 0.10 point tick equals $0.50. To see how the exchange, clearing and platform costs of a trade add up, you can request a custom commission quote.

The above information is derived from sources believed to be accurate. It is provided without guarantees and is subject to change without notice.
CME Group lists RTY on a quarterly cycle: March (H), June (M), September (U) and December (Z). The contracts are cash settled, so no shares change hands. Final settlement is based on the opening value of the Russell 2000 Index on the third Friday of the contract month, and trading in the expiring contract ends at the scheduled start of trading on the New York Stock Exchange that day.
Both contracts track the Russell 2000 Index and use a 0.10 point minimum tick. The difference is size. RTY is $50 times the index, and M2K (often called micro RTY) is $5 times the index, one tenth of the size. CME Group describes the micro contract as a way to manage exposure to the 2,000 small cap stocks in the Russell 3000 universe. Margin requirements differ by contract and can change. Our futures margin requirements help page explains how day and overnight margins work.
E-mini Russell 2000 (RTY) futures are cash-settled contracts that track the Russell 2000 Index, representing 2,000 small-cap U.S. stocks. Traders use RTY futures to speculate on or hedge small-cap market performance without owning the underlying shares. They trade nearly 24 hours a day, offering flexible access to small-cap equity movements.
RTY futures allow traders to agree to buy or sell the Russell 2000 Index at a future date. Positions are marked to market daily, with profits and losses settled in cash. Traders can take long or short positions, leveraging capital to efficiently manage exposure to small-cap U.S. equities.
Each E-mini Russell 2000 (RTY) futures contract represents $50 × the Russell 2000 Index points. For example, if the index is at 2,000, one contract has a notional value of $100,000. This smaller contract size makes RTY futures accessible to retail and institutional traders.
The minimum tick size for RTY futures is 0.10 index points, and each tick is worth $5 per contract. A full 1-point move equals $50 per contract, allowing traders to calculate risk and reward efficiently.
Day trading margins for RTY futures typically start around $500 per contract, while overnight margins are higher. Traders with smaller accounts can use Micro E-mini Russell 2000 (M2K) futures, which are 1/10th the size of standard RTY contracts, requiring much lower margin.
M2K futures are 1/10th the size of standard RTY contracts, offering lower margin requirements and smaller exposure. Both track the Russell 2000 Index, but M2K offers a smaller contract size for more granular position sizing, while standard RTY offers larger exposure per contract.
Beginners can trade RTY futures if they understand tick value, margin, and risk management. Starting with Micro E-mini Russell 2000 (M2K) futures allows smaller positions, lower capital risk, and a learning curve before trading full-size RTY contracts.

Yes. RTY futures are a common tool for hedging exposure to U.S. small-cap stocks. By taking short positions in RTY, traders can offset potential losses in their small-cap portfolios during market downturns.
If your account equity falls below required maintenance margin, your broker may issue a margin call, requiring additional funds to maintain positions. Failure to meet a margin call can lead to forced liquidation of positions.
The most liquid periods are during U.S. stock market hours, especially from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, when volume and volatility are highest. Extended hours also offer opportunities but with slightly wider spreads.
Profit and loss on RTY futures are calculated using tick value and contract size. Each 0.10 index-point tick equals $5 per contract. Multiply the number of ticks the market moves by $5 and your number of contracts to determine total P/L.
The CME Globex ticker symbol is RTY. The Micro E-mini Russell 2000 contract uses the symbol M2K.
Yes. RTY trades on CME Globex Sunday through Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT, with a daily halt from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. CT, so the contract trades before the U.S. stock market opens.
